What do parents who are struggling
To feed their families
Feel when they wake up every morning
And learn that the capitalist princes
Might take away even more government assistance
Another day when it’s up for grabs
Whether or not their children
Will have enough to eat?
Every day brings more bad news –
Food programs curtailed or eliminated
Medical assistance gone
More than a million children inadequately nourished
While the government continues
To expend obscene amounts on murder
All over the planet
Is this the world we dreamed of for our children?
When we were children
Is this the way we imagined living,
Not knowing how long it will be
Before the next meal?
Not knowing whether we’ll be turned away from the hospital
When we need care?
Did we imagine huge data centers
And missile factories
Gobbling up the power and the resources
That could be used to end hunger
To create housing for all
To provide free medical care for everyone?
When we wake up in America
We wake up in a den of thieves
The wolves are howling
Children are shivering from cold and hunger
Their parents are desperately trying to figure out
How to give them what they need
To be healthy and happy youngsters
When we wake up in America
We are filled with outrage and sorrow and grief
Asking ourselves
What can we do?
