CJPME’s Media Accountability Project (MAP) had two important victories this week against poor reporting on Palestine:
- The CBC was forced to issue a country-wide on-air correction after falsely claiming that the illegally-occupied West Bank was “disputed territory.” After CJPME requested a formal review by the Ombuds, CBC aired an on-air correction across Canada, clarifying: “On July 27, World Report ran a story about violence in the occupied West Bank. At one point, it was incorrectly referred to as disputed territory. It should have been referred to as occupied territory.”
- The Jerusalem Post was forced to completely overhaul an article following a complaint from CJPME, as it was poorly sourced and fundamentally incorrect. The original version carelessly conflated the “Arms Embargo Now” coalition’s upcoming Day of Action with another group, Palestine Action Canada, using the confusion to justify including three full paragraphs amplifying calls from pro-Israel groups for the activists to be designated as a terrorist entity. In response to CJPME, the Post quietly deleted entire paragraphs of false claims, restructured an article’s premise, and altered quotes without issuing a formal correction or editor’s note. This represents journalistic malpractice and ethical violations of the highest order. CJPME filed a formal complaint with the Israeli Public Council for Press and Ethics.
