The God of Auschwitz and of Gaza

Somewhere in the sky, the invisible reason
for the why of everything. A silver-bearded
old man who knows the flight of every sparrow,
who has a divine purpose for every action
on this earth, who tabulates every heartbeat
and breath taken, whose judgement will be final.

What was the reason then that they packed
the chambers full? What divine plan was it
to feed innocent men, women, and children
into the fiery mouths of complete extinction?
Why the massive pits of rotting flesh and bone?

What divine logic has brought unbridled cruelty
into this world? Some twisted mind at work?
The once omniscient, now a doddering old fool
drooling down his celestial robe, lulled to sleep
by the fluttering silken wings of the Seraphim?

And how can the greatest recorded mass murder
become the reason for another mass murder
where the innocent are blown to bloody pieces
or crushed alive by descending concrete and stone?
How can God’s banner fly above a field of slaughter?

The time has come to accept that we alone are God.
We alone are the reason for the utter destruction
of each other and ourselves and our world.
We alone make the wars, but it is we alone
who can make the peace and tend the gardens.
