The Purpose of Mating

I found the answer to the puzzle
why evangelicals insist to the max
that girls mate younger and produce
more babies as a nation-wide fact.

They insist we return to decades ago
when women had but one private role,
to serve a man as his brood mare
and veritable slave under his control.

An existential and personal angst
underlies their insistent demands
that we adopt their goals because
Christianity is their command.

For if there’s never any progeny,
what has their sad life been worth
if not enslaved to the whims of men?
They think womens’ autonomy is cursed.

(in Watership Down, an adventure novel that began from a tale that Richard Adams told his young daughters during long car journeys, male rabbits risk their lives to secure female rabbits to ensure the longevity of the warren, knowing that if they cannot mate, all their utopian dreams will die with them, and their adventure will have been for nothing)
