Suspend the EU–Israel Association Agreement

It has been more than a year since the European Union (EU), Israel’s number one trade partner, found that Israel is in breach of the human rights clause of the EU–Israel Association Agreement. Despite recent sanctions on trade with illegal Israeli settlements imposed by twelve countries, the EU continues to choose complicity over accountability. As the success of a recent European Citizens’ Initiative demonstrates, the EU’s position has never been more at odds with the views of the European public.

In July, a European Citizens’ Initiative calling for the immediate suspension of the EU–Israel Association Agreement became the fastest-growing initiative to date. This difficult-to-achieve level of cross-border European civic engagement demonstrates growing solidarity and widespread popular support for justice for Palestinians, amid flagrant Israeli violations of international law.

Once signatures are validated, the initiative will be submitted to the European Union, and its leadership will be forced to formally answer for their inaction. This initiative is just one of many tools organizers are using to increase pressure on governments to uphold their minimum obligations under international law.
