The gaslighting of a gaslit nation
was dialed way up when at last
his satanic presence had passed;
was dialed up the day
a man who'd made devastation
his life's depraved mission
had “following a lengthy illness”
finally transitioned
and it was cranked up
to what seemed like eleven
when surreal reverential displays
of wholesale historical revision
took front centre stage
as the fiction-spinning stars
of an in-your-face parade
of despicably fanciful eulogies;
took centre stage for as long and as far
as the mercifully deceased
incomparable warmongering beast
was honoured and lionized
as a warrior for peace.
Swathed in layers
of still-damp-with-drool
sanctifying praise
unspooled
from insufferably effusive
impossibly fawning tributes
his body lay in state
a five-star send-off
for the great czar of hate
as whitewashing patriotic cant
was broadcast ad nauseam
and fetishized flags flew at half-mast
--- war's deplorable
untiring champion had finally passed
and long before the adoring
intensely contemptible adulatory hordes
of homage-paying sycophants had filed by
and his lustrous casket had been lowered
and the thundering salute had boomed
from the last of the black-barreled guns
the Prince of Darkness had already thrown
a welcome-home bash for his favorite son.
