Save the Whales

Half the commercials that I see on television
Show helpless animals in need of provision
Tigers, elephants, rhinoceroses, and whales
But for humans in distress, our society fails

So many suffering every day from neglect
With needs that governments ignore or reject
It’s stylish to help only when credit is due
That’s what the rich and famous seem to do

Too many children wallowing in the mire
People! The need for our compassion is dire!
I want to save whales as much the next guy
But let’s save the humans before they all die

Man’s lust for power and control yields harm
Infant mortality rate is cause for great alarm
Many campaigns have misplaced our priorities
Left too long in the hands of inept authorities

Let’s start with our neighbors, do they hunger?
Aren’t the local homeless now much younger?
Feed and house them first, let charity prevail
Then ask me about saving another whale…
